Roman blinds are a sophisticated choice if you’re looking to transform your living space and add a touch of luxury to your interiors. Although, to ensure you get the best out of your new purchase, it’s important you know how to hang blinds like a professional. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore how to hang roman blinds, ensuring your journey to a refined home is simple and stylish.
Before you begin, you must decide whether you’re going to install your Roman blinds inside or outside the recess. This is usually decided when you order your blinds as we may need to make certain adjustments depending on your choice. Both options present unique characteristics and the option you choose can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your space.
Blinds within the recess offer a sleek and integrated appearance, fitting snugly inside the window frame, providing a tailored and refined look. This option is ideal for those who want a seamless design that still allows you to appreciate elements of the window itself. It adds a touch of sophistication, allowing the blinds to become a subtle yet integral part of the overall interior.
On the other hand, exact blinds, which are hung outside the recess, boast a more dramatic and pronounced presence. Extending beyond the window frame, this style creates an illusion of larger windows and enhances the visual dimensions of the room. This choice is particularly popular when it comes to hanging Roman blinds. It’s perfect for those who wish to make a bold statement, framing the window beautifully.
If you’re unsure how to hang a roman blind within the recess of your window, simply follow the steps below. With our expert knowledge, you’ll have your new blinds fitted in no time!
Installing the Bracket: Usually for a recess fit blind, you’ll want to top fix your bracket to the top of the window recess. Begin by positioning the top fix bracket against the lintel (ceiling of your recess) and use the single hole in the top of the bracket to fix it in place. This method provides a sleek, streamlined appearance that blends seamlessly with your window frame.
Safety First: It’s important to always prioritise safety by installing the blind at least 150cm above the floor. This ensures not only a visually appealing placement but also minimises potential hazards if you have any little ones or pets running around.
Headrail Installation: Fit the blinds by installing the headrail using the brackets you now have top fixed to the recess. You should first open the locking lever on the bracket by pushing it to the right, then tilt the headrail and clip it into the front of the bracket as shown. Once you have the front of in place, push the back of the headrail up to the base of the bracket and hold it there while you secure the locking lever. This is done by simply pushing the locking lever to the left. Locking this in place guarantees stability and durability. With wide blinds, its best to have another person hold the headrail in place while the levers are being secured in place.
Child Safety: All our blinds come with a child safety device which should be installed to prevent looped cords from hanging loose. Always install your child safety clip at the maximum distance possible to prevent the cords from becoming slack. The safety device can be screwed in place using the fixings provided.
Operating the Blind: Each of our roman blinds come with a quality chrome chain mechanism which can be used to open and close your blind. Pull down on the front part of the chain to open the blind and pull down on the rear part of the chain to close the blind.

Now that you know the basics on how to hang roman blinds, let’s go over some of our favourite tips and tricks, frequently asked questions, as well as things to note when hanging your new blinds.
Always Fit in the Same Location you Measured
It may sound obvious, but for those fitting their blind outside the window recess, it’s essential that you make sure you install the blind exactly where you measured. Trying to fit something higher or lower than where your measurement was taken is likely to result in stressful installation and unnecessary effort. We recommend that when you measure for your blind, you mark the area on your wall, this way you’ll have a seamless installation when your new blind arrives.
Check for your Window Depth and Any Obstructions
It’s important to double check your window depth before installing your new blinds if you plan on fitting them within the recess. By ‘depth’ we’re referring to the distance from the glass of your window out to the edge of the window recess. How far the blind ‘sticks out’ from back to front will dictate whether you can fit that blind inside the recess or not, this is usually referred to as the headrail depth. If you think your recess may be too shallow, then you may need to fit your blinds outside the window facia onto your wall or window frame .
It's not only the depth of your recess that can cause problems, other things may cause obstructions to your blinds. Certain things such as handles and vents may restrict the amount of depth you have to fit your blind. The easiest way to check for obstructions is to take 2 measurements – one from the window frame to the edge of the recess, then one from the window frame to the front of the obstruction (e.g. handle). Take the latter away from the former to see how much depth you have and assess whether your headrail will fit within that space. If it doesn’t, you’ll likely have to go for an exact fitting, otherwise your blind may get caught on these obstructions when trying to open and close them.
Another thing to note is that if your window opens inwards, then there’s a good chance you might need to fit your blinds outside the recess. Again, this will depend on the overall depth of your window recess. Every window is different, so we always recommend you assess the space yourself to ensure your blinds fit perfectly.
Is your Blind Uneven?
If you find at any point that the roman blind has fallen to one side, it’s likely that this has been caused by a simple mix-up with the controls. Usually this happens if they have been pulled the wrong way to either raise or lower the blind. This can cause the cords to roll up unevenly.
The good news is there’s a simple fix to this problem! Simply use the chain to fully lower the blind, then continue pulling the chain until it rises back to the top. The blind should even itself out as you do so, and you can prevent the same issue occurring again by making sure the chain is always pulled in the correct direction going forward.
How to Remove Blinds
If you need to remove your blind for any reason such as to clean your windows, or the blind itself, it’s incredibly easy to do so. To release the blind from the brackets at any point after installing, push firmly against the blind’s headrail to detach it from the front your brackets. At the same time, gently twist the back of the headrail downwards to unclip it at the back.
What Screws Should I Use?
It’s important to ensure the fixings and screws you’ll be using are suitable for the wall or surface you are mounting the brackets to. If you plan on attaching your brackets to plasterboard, PVC, wood, or anything other than brick and mortar, then we’d suggest popping to your local hardware store and checking with them which screws, and other fittings would be best to use.
Your hardware store may suggest using raw plugs with your screws to get the most secure fit for your blinds. To use them, you should first drill a hole into the surface of your wall or frame, insert a raw plug, then fit the screw into that – the screw will then bite into the plastic securely and force the plug to expand. This ensures a tight, solid, and secure fitting. A good tip is to make your hole using a drill bit that’s slightly smaller in diameter than the raw plug – the tighter you can make the space the better!
