A standout statement piece from our wooden sculptures collection, Hewie the Highland Cow has become a cherished favourite among interior enthusiasts and the Voyage Maison team. Comprising a total of three unique and charming Highland Cow sculptures, the Hewie range is a celebration of the distinct spirit that Scotland’s northern countryside has to offer.
With Hewie’s level of renown continuing to rise among admirers of country folk decor, now seems like the perfect time for a formal introduction to the Highland Cow that’s stolen our hearts. From the sustainable materials used in his construction to the months-long manufacturing process that perfects his endearingly rustic appearance — it’s time to become properly acquainted with Hewie the Highland Cow.
At Voyage Maison, the force behind much of our creative inspiration lies in the ancient majesty of Scotland’s heritage and nature. From our Highland Cow statues to our hand-painted soft furnishings, each design in some way honours Scotland’s natural beauty, and seeks to celebrate her effortless contrast between the rugged and the elegant. As a proudly Scottish brand, our talented team of artists is lucky enough to derive inspiration from the natural beauty which surrounds them, perhaps the epitome of which is the Scottish Highland Cow.
Known as the Bó Gháidgealach in Scottish Gaelic, or the Heilan Coo in the Germanic Scots language — Highland Cattle have roamed the wilds of Scotland for centuries. Their signature curved horns and long, shaggy coats have made the Highland Cow an iconic symbol of Scotland and its culture, often referenced throughout the country’s rich artistic heritage. As proud purveyors of Scotland and her history, we at Voyage Maison view Highland Cow Sculptures as powerful symbols of the artistic heritage from which we were borne.
The Hewie range of Highland Cow Sculptures currently consists of three distinct and hand-crafted designs. Our largest Hewie sculpture features a free-standing Hewie on a flat wooden base, while the smallest variation is a wall-mounted Highland Cow bust. The third and final Hewie design includes a bust mounted on a two-tier wooden pedestal — perfect for a space-saving statement on console tables and narrower furniture. For those seeking a slightly more dramatic addition to their home, our Howard the Highland Cow sculpture stands at a striking 1.4 metres tall.
While each Hewie the Highland Cow sculpture brings its own unique character to any living space, there are many factors which tie the range together. From the materials he’s made from to the bespoke design process that brings his pastoral charm to life — here’s a detailed run-through of everything you need to know about Hewie the Highland Cow.
1. He's Sustainable
Our Highland Cow sculptures are crafted entirely from natural and renewable materials, meaning that Hewie represents a sustainable décor choice on top of making a noteworthy addition to your home. The horns and body are carved into shape from a large piece of wood, while the iconic Highland Cow coat consists of hundreds of individual branches.
All Highland Cow statues from Voyage Maison are made using a combination of Rattan, Elm Wood, Paulownia, Fir and Poplar. These 100% natural wood sources are all biodegradable and fully-renewable.
2. He’s Artisan-Crafted
Each of our Highland Cow sculptures is entirely handmade by artisan woodworkers. The manufacturing process takes a total of 2-3 months to complete, and involves everything from carving a wooden frame to individually attaching each branch of Hewie’s Highland Cow coat. The process starts by cutting pieces for Hewie’s head, body and horns from a large piece of wood.
These pieces are then shaped and refined to create a lifelike Highland Cow figure. Wooden branches are hammered and split into fur-like pieces, before being individually attached to the body and head using a nail gun. Next, we give Hewie a beautifully groomed finish by trimming down any particularly long branches.
3. He’s Perfected Down to the Finest Detail
All wooden sculptures at Voyage Maison undergo an extensive refinement and treating process. Having passed our final round of quality checks, Hewie is left to cure for a period of 2-3 months before being packaged and shipped to your home.
Curing our Highland Cow busts and sculptures ensures that the wood has time to fully dry out, allowing moisture to evaporate slowly over time. Leaving our sculptures to dry in this way increases the overall strength and durability of the wood, making it less likely to warp, crack or become damaged over time. While it takes time for a Hewie sculpture to reach its final form, this extensive curing process leads to an enhanced organic appearance, creating peace of mind around quality and maximising longevity.
